N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): A Convenient Rationale for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

Paris-Redox-2021-Speaker Arno BourgonjeDr. Arno Bourgonje from University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands, will present a talk entitled "N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): A Convenient Rationale for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)?".

Accumulating evidence provided by Dr. Bourgonje suggests that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) may have a modulatory role in the pathophysiology of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Dissecting the relevant molecular pathways reveals the existence of both antiviral and antioxidant effects of H2S, which may therefore constitute a versatile and modifiable host factor in patients with COVID-19. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a renowned pharmacological antioxidant substance acting as a source of cysteine, thereby promoting endogenous glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis as well as the generation of sulfane sulfur species when desulfurated to H2S. Clinical trials are currently on their way to demonstrate the potential effectiveness and applicability of NAC supplementation to promote endogenous H2S production in patients with COVID-19. Should we aim for the application of H2S-targeted therapeutics in COVID-19?
