What is the role of iron overload in initiating oxidative stress in congenital and acquired hemolytic anemias?

Eliezer Rachmilewitz Paris Redox 2017

During Paris Redox 2017, Prof. Eliezer Rachmilewitz from the Hematology Department, Edith Wolfson Medical Center at Holon, Israel, will describe the pathophysiology of Iron Overload as the main cause of oxidative stress in congenital and acquired hemolytic anemias due to the presence of free iron species: non transferrin bound iron, labile plasma iron and cellular labile iron pool. The latter generates reactive oxygen species that cause damage to major cellular component.

In addition, the therapeautic options of iron chelators and specific antioxidants will be presented.
