The scientific committee is pleased to announce that Dr Parvana will give a talk about the Membrane proteins as redox hubs in the brain, during Antioxidants World Congress 2015
Dr Parvana, from the Institute for Pathobiochemistry in Germany, will focus on the Membrane proteins as redox hubs in the brain, during the 15th International Conference on Oxidative Stress Reduction, Redox Homeostasis and Antioxidants, held on June 22-24 in Pasteur Institute, Paris.
"In the wake of fresh etiologic concepts, the idea of oxidative stress as origin of neurodegeneration has recaptured interest lately. Studying protein oxidation as key embodiment of the oxidative stress hypothesis, we have found that membrane proteins appear to play a pivotal role as one-electron redox shuttles in neuronal membranes. In case of overload, however, this basically beneficial function might turn against protein integrity itself, since under increased stress, membrane proteins become to be the primary victims of oxidative damage in the brain. Post mortem data indicate that the human neocortex is particularly affected in this respect. The tissue-specific differences between humans and rodents, however, cannot be explained without considering a second factor as essential, namely protein lifetime, which may be unusually long in humans."
