Therapeutic Insights into Delaying the Onset of Cataract
Dr. Julie Lim, from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, will this year introduce the "Ocular Disorders & Redox Medicine: Recent Advances & Perspectives" session by presenting her most recent findings on "Therapeutic Insights into Delaying the Onset of Cataract".
Glutathione is the principal antioxidant in the lens. However, with advancing age, glutathione levels deplete resulting in a cascade of events that ultimately result in cataract formation; the leading cause of blindness in the world. Despite research into antioxidant supplementation to delay cataracts, these studies have been largely unsuccessful. In this talk, Dr. Lim will present some of her laboratory’s recent work into understanding the physiology of the lens and the mechanisms used to deliver and accumulate antioxidants in the different regions of the lens. It is through this approach that she hopes to develop more targeted therapies that are effective in protecting the lens from oxidative damage and cataract.
You are welcomed to submit any abstracts related to this session.
